It was just another routine day of practice for us receiving & treating our patients. Time was around
1 pm in the afternoon. Since our lunch break is around 2 pm, we still had another 1 hour to go. In
comes this lady aged around early 30’s covering her face with a scarf & will shyness softly spoke
about pain in one of her teeth. We politely ask her to take off her scarf & to our surprise, she has this
bulge below one of her eye & she could not even open her eye completely. Severe pain was written
completely over her face which seemed pale given her overall dental condition. Without wasting any
time, we immediately took one x –ray & checked if we could save the offending tooth in question.
Being an optimistic person, ofcourse we explained it to her that we can definitely try to save her
teeth but that would require a Root Canal followed by a crown to protect the tooth. She was a little
hesitant since she was working as a domestic help & so from our part we gave her an offer she
couldn’t refuse. In the first sitting we drained her abscess & cleaned the nerves using our Rotary
R.C.T machine from Japan which does length determination all by itself leading to exact & complete
removal of the infected part of the nerves & a sterile environment inside of the tooth.
We prescribed her anti biotics & anti inflammatory medicines as per the protocol & told her to come
after 4 days. She returned at the fourth day & as expected the humongous swelling below her eye &
face had drastically reduced & we could actually see her original face that day. She was happy & told
us that she is actually very relieved of the pain & didn’t need to take any pain killers after 2 days
only. We did local irrigation that day & told her to come after 2 days for completion of the root canal
process. To finish RCT in cases of acute abscess in hurry can be counter productive & suicidal since
the Pus can spread to other parts of the face including brain as in her situation had extended upto
her eye margin. Patience is the key here & it pays in the long run.
We completed her R.C.T after another 2 days since the canals were dry & all the inflammation gone
from her face completely by then. We thanked her for her cooperation during the procedure &
wished her all the best in life & future. And there we were , back to our life & work , feeling
contended that we could do some good for those in need.
